He soldiered through to what would have been a 39th career meeting with Federer, but said he knew when he practiced Saturday morning that he wouldn't be able to play to an adequate standard.

"I warmed up today and I felt that my knee was not good to compete at the level I needed to compete in semi-finals", Nadal told the tournament's official website.

"I got on the golf cart back to the main building then Rafa texted me a message saying, 'It's not going to be possible, my knee's not well and I can't do it.' I went back to the house and relaxed".

"It's a big letdown", said Federer, who came on court in khaki shorts and a grey cardigan to address fans. [Nadal] played so well this week and I thought he was playing some of his best tennis again.

Federer received a walkover to the final, where he will play either Austria's Dominic Thiem or Milos Raonic of Canada.

Raonic hit far more winners than Thiem, but combined that with 35 unforced errors, one of which gave the Austrian the match's first break in the fifth game of the third set.

Thiem and Federer have split their four previous meetings, with only one going three sets.

That meant the pair's wait to go head-to-head will continue, having not shared the court on the ATP Tour since October 2017 in the final of the Shanghai Masters.

The Spaniard's right knee flared up in the second set of his 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2) victory over Karen Khachanov in Friday's quarterfinals. It was obvious that Nadal's movement was hampered. "What I'm gonna do is go home and try to smoothly transition to clay and be 100 percent for the first event in Monte Carlo".

"It is not about only today", Nadal said in an emotional press conference after announcing his decision.

Nadal choked up discussing his withdrawal last fall and he appeared near tears on Saturday.

He admitted that he sometimes is sad because he feels at a disadvantage against his opponents due to his continued knee issues that force him to limit his practice and playing time.

"It's not the moment to complain much".

The year began promisingly enough.

Nadal reached the final at the Australian Open, and while he lost in straight sets to Novak Djokovic he said it was a positive sign after he had to pull the plug early on his 2018 season. He is ranked No. 2 in the world and has a match record of 11-2.

While Nadal said he feels knee pain "almost always", in the face of this latest setback he insisted: "My goal doesn't change". "A lot has happened in those 18 months... you can't just copy/paste and play exactly the same thing again", said Federer.
