The main suspect in New Zealand's worst peacetime mass shooting meant to continue the rampage before he was caught by police, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Saturday (March 16). A 28-year-old Australian man, a suspected far-right extremist who posted a manifesto detailing his anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim views, was charged with murder in a New Zealand court Saturday.

The Bulgarian government has also said it was looking into Tarrant, who apparently visited the country late a year ago, as well as having earlier travelled to other parts of the Balkans - including Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We are paying specific attention to Mosques, particularly Friday prayers.

Gun control experts told the Guardian such weapons can be easily converted into a military-style semi-automatic rifle using a high-capacity magazine, the sale of which is not regulated in New Zealand.

When the gunman entered the Al Noor mosque, there were around 400 people inside.

The site of the terrorist attacks is sealed off in Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 16, 2019.

"Maybe it's not really the first incident that's happened with violence in mosques but it's the first of its kind with that large number of victims that were actually killed in that heinous attack".

Officials in New Zealand will be probing whether those behind deadly mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch should have been on the radar of authorities, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Friday.

The massacre was described as an "act of terror brought to our shores and rained down upon us" by New Zealand Prime Minister Ardern, as the Australian gunman fronted court over the attack.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed this afternoon that her government will look into changing New Zealand's gun laws, in light of the revelation that the alleged Christchurch gunman's weapons yesterday appeared to have been modified.

Doctors at Christchurch hospital said they worked through the night in 12 operating theatres to do what they could to save the survivors. "In response to the attacks in New Zealand, we have a heightened police presence in the community focusing on places of worship - especially mosques", police said in a statement.

The manifesto was sent to several public figures in New Zealand, including Ardern.

A short distance away, 39 people were being treated in hospital for gunshot wounds and other injuries inflicted in the massacre.

Tarrant, of New South Wales, obtained a gun license in November 2017 and started buying the weapons he used Friday about a month later, Ardern said. While he allowed media persons to take photographs and film the proceedings, he ordered that Tarrant's face be pixelated as his identity might be a part of the court case. He said his mother, who was at the Linwood mosque with his father and brother, saw two people shot.

New Zealand, with a population of five million, has relatively loose gun laws and an estimated 1.5 million firearms, or roughly one for every three people.

"Today we stand in solidarity with the Muslim community and stand up against growing racism and hatred around the world", said FSWC president Avi Benlolo.

In signs police say show a well-planned attack, army personnel were also called in to dismantle explosive devices found in a stopped auto and officers were on Friday evening searching a house in Dunedin, 360 kilometres away, clearing nearby homes for safety.
