Reputed Gambino crime boss shot and killed outside NY home

Aggressive federal prosecutions in the past 25 years decimated the ranks of New York's five Mafia families.

A law enforcement official confirmed to CNN that the victim was a high-ranking member of the Gambino organized crime family and is believed to be the acting boss.

The reputed boss of the US Gambino crime family was shot to death in front of his NY home by a gunman who may have staged a auto accident to lure him outside, dying a virtual unknown compared with his swaggering 1980s-era predecessor, John Gotti.

Wednesday night's shooting is reminiscent of the 1985 murder of another Gambino crime boss, Paul Castellano, who was gunned down outside a popular New York City steakhouse in 1985.

Police added he was taken to Staten Island University North hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The New York Daily News stated that a family member called 911 and said Cali was run over before he was shot; one witness told the Daily News, "There were like six shots, and then there were three more".

Experts agree that Francesco Cali was the individual responsible for consolidating the Gambino family after John Gotti was sent to prison on murder and racketeering in 1992, leaving the mob outfit in a power vacuum so conspicuous, even the casual observer could sense their grip on the criminal underworld was on the fritz.

"There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing", police said.

"We thought those days were over", the city's mayor Bill de Blasio told journalists.

Now, authorities are turning a watchful eye to just-out-of-jail Gene Gotti, brother of the late John Gotti, who was released from prison six months ago after serving 29 years for dealing heroin, reports the New York Daily News.

He had long ties with the Sicilian mafia and the Gambino family, and was said to have intentionally kept a low profile during his time in charge. "Very surprising, but I guess old habits die hard".

Last October, 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola, a reputed associate of the Bonanno organisation, was shot dead at a takeaway restaurant in the Bronx, New York.
