So how can one identify a good and effective antivirus app from the fraudulent one? A new report has come out to show that two-thirds of all these apps don't work as advertised - they're all frauds.

Only 23 apps had a 100 percent success rate with all malware samples.

If you are using Aptoide, you can choose from a wide range of 30.000 apps, even offering you some that Google Play Store does not because those apps might violate the policies of Google.

The company tested 250 apps and only 80 passed the basic test.

Some 200 apps available on the Google Play Store contained unsafe advertising code that had the potential to force a smartphone to display ads outside the apps, open links to websites and the app store automatically, and download new apps independently.

Just as it should, Google is always changing Android in order to harden it not just against hackers but also against unscrupulous app developers.

But experts have claimed that over half of VPN apps for Android ask users for "dangerous" permissions.

The apps had been downloaded an estimated 111 million times, accordion to Check Point, and are the first known example of of malicious apps that bypass the Android sandbox to install malicious apps. Some security apps couldn't run on Oreo; for those, AV Comparatives used Android 6.01 running on a Nexus 5 instead.

Each of the over 200 applications spotted by researchers has since been removed from the Google Play Store via Google's policies but some of those were extremely popular. However, it does also lock out legitimate apps that use clipboard data for other purposes, like passing them to a PC for seamless copying and pasting between devices.

"Most of the above apps, as well as the risky apps already mentioned, appear to have been developed either by amateur programmers or by software manufacturers that are not focused on the security business", the AV-Comparatives staff said.

One unexpected twist: AV Comparatives found some anti-virus apps failed to add themselves to their own whitelist, which caused the app to flag itself as being malware. That means you'll be able to change up bokeh and depth styles in various other apps, if you so choose. They can also take advantage of the company's developer guides and privacy checklists. The update about the affected apps revealed that they were mostly a shooter and racing games.

As you'd expect from such a major release, the laundry list of new features, enhancements and fixes is extensive and delves into everything from superficial interface changes to developer tools and APIs that most of us would rarely hear about or even realise existed.
