World Wide Web turns 30 years old

March 12, 1989 was a big day in the annals of digital history. MIT coordinates the U.S. consortium, and the European side is coordinated by INRIA, the French research center. By challenging ourselves, we are also measuring success or at least understand the number of sacrifices one is willing to make in the name of it. Tim Berners-Lee's success in creating the World Wide Web, despite the challenges he encountered, is just another example of a man who is not afraid of falling.

All those web pages, photos, videos and any kind of content on the online platform can be called World Wide Web, which you can access through a browser.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, we've gathered some of the "firsts" of the web and the internet.

The internet, which is a network of networks formed of computers, existed long before the World Wide Web.

Though the World Wide Web has only been around for a few decades, it's practically impossible to imagine life without it today. It opened the way to a technological revolution that has transformed the way people buy things, share ideas, get information and much more.

But Berners-Lee is optimistic about the future of the web, which he sees as constantly evolving.

In brief: Thirty years ago this week, Tim Berners-Lee proposed an information management system that would eventually become the World Wide Web we know today. It also has given groups traditionally not heard a new voice in society.

Berners-Lee worked at CERN in the 1980s as a young software engineer. "They are all stepping back suddenly horrified after the Trump and Brexit elections realizing that this web thing that they thought was so cool has actually not necessarily been serving humanity very well". "If we don't elect politicians who defend a free and open web, if we don't do our part to foster constructive healthy conversations online, if we continue to click consent without demanding our data rights be respected, we walk away from our responsibility to put these issues on the priority agenda of our governments".

Berners-Lee launched a campaign called "Contract for the Web" at the Web Summit tech conference in Lisbon, Portugal, last year. Well many people believe that the Internet was born only after the arrival of WWW but this is not true.

The WWW, commonly known as the Web, is an information space where documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators (URLs). In addition, citizens should seek to "build strong communities that respect civil discourse and human dignity".

Of course with every new feature, every new website, the divide between those who are online and those who are not increases, making it all the more imperative to make the web available for everyone.
