Wireless Headphones Like AirPods Could Pose Cancer Risk

Scientists sign petition saying that Air Pods can cause cancer Here’s what 250 scientists says about your wireless AirPods

Apple's popular wireless AirPods headphones may pose cancer risks to wearers, according to a United Nations and World Health Organization petition.

A Medium article published last week poses the question, "Are AirPods and Other Bluetooth Headphones Safe?". Dr. Moskowitz focuses on cell phone exposure, and says "there isn't even any research on what it could be doing to the brain, let alone regulation to limit potential effects".

But the new petitions' authors warn that even these guidelines could be risky - and much more research is needed.

The Airpods has become Apple's most popular accessory.

He is among the large group of scientists to have signed a petition calling for "protection" from the technology.

Some 250 have signed the petition, which warns against numerous devices that emit radiofrequency radiation, which is used in WiFi, cellular data and Bluetooth. Beats and Apple wireless headphone together account for over 40% of the product market, but these devices may be pumping more than sounds into the heads of their users.

The most obvious and well-established risk of radiowaves is that, at high levels, they can generate heat and cause burns.

"My concern for AirPods is that their placement in the ear canal exposes tissues in the head to relatively high levels of radio-frequency radiation", says Jerry Philips, a biochemist with a teaching residency at the University of Colorado.

"Numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms at levels well below most global and national guidelines", the scientists collectively wrote in their appeal. Bluetooth technology uses low-power radio waves.

The reports suggest that other studies have been carried out on this type of radio waves and they have found that, in animals, it can cause "radiation, reproductive, neurological and genetic damage" more often than would be expected in a normal sample of the same animals.

EMF is a form of radiowave similar to - but not as powerful or risky as - X-rays or UV.

Electromagnetic field radiation has been declared by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a potential carcinogen.

The petition also mentions the fact that respective agencies that are supposed to introduce EMF exposure safety standards on permissible EMF exposure levels have so far failed to so, adding that "no sufficient guidelines" have been imposed "to protect the general public, particularly children who are more vulnerable to the effects of EMF".
