US Ranks Low in Quality of Living — Mercer Global Survey

The researches estimated the cities under the following criteria: leisure, public services and transport, social and cultural environment, medical service, political and social environment, nature, accommodation, economy, access to consumer goods.

Dublin, which was ranked safer than any British city, rose one spot to 33rd overall, just above San Francisco.

At the other end of the scale, Iraqi capital Baghdad was ranked at the bottom of the list.

"Companies looking to expand overseas have a host of considerations when identifying where best to locate staff and new offices", a statement accompanying Mercer's 21st annual Quality of Living survey for 2019 read.

Venezuelan capital Caracas came in 202nd place, with researchers flagging that its living standards had dropped due to its current economic and political instability.

In South East Asia, other notable cities include Kuala Lumpur (85th), Bangkok (133rd), Manila (137th), and Jakarta (142nd); and in mainland China: Shanghai (103rd), Beijing (120th), Guangzhou (122nd) and Shenzen (132nd). As for Asia, Singapore (25th) has the highest quality of living, followed by the five Japanese cities of Tokyo (49th), Kobe (49th), Yokohama (55th), Osaka (58th), and Nagoya (62nd).

Vancouver in Canada and Auckland in New Zealand were the only non-European cities to rank higher than Copenhagen, while German cities Düsseldorf and Frankfurt also edged out the Danish capital.

The safest city in Europe was Luxembourg (1), followed by Basel, Bern, Helsinki and Zurich in joint second. Kuwait City fell 27 notches in the index compared to its ranking a year ago when it landed on the 99th spot. According to the survey, Phnom Penh is in the lowest rank in terms of personal safety.

The survey also said that London is the United Kingdom's best city to live in.
