A 16-year-old girl has been nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her astonishing worldwide campaign to protect the environment.

You have failed us in the past.

On Friday, tens of thousands of student activists with the Youth Climate Strike will walk out of class in over 110 countries, demanding that their respective governments stop treating the environmental crisis with comically sub-par measures.

More marches were planned throughout Europe and the United States later on Friday, while Asia and Oceania also protest.

Young Derry students at a number of Derry schools will tomorrow leave their classrooms in a staged "strike" to attend a protest on climate change.

The planet is now on track to heat up by double that figure. "One of those is compatible with life, the other isn't".

Student protesters blocked the French bank Societe Generale's headquarters near Paris on Friday morning.

"We are striking because marginalized communities across our nation - especially communities of color, disabled communities, and low- income communities are already disproportionately impacted by climate change".

One parent in attendance said that about 1,000 kids are at the strike, with more "streaming in" all of the time.

Other changes needed to curb greenhouse gas emissions include ramping up renewable energy production, reigning in over-consumption culture now spreading beyond the industrialized West and changing diets, experts say.

She said: There's no better way to make our point than not be where we're supposed to be.

That conversation is likely to get louder, with several US presidential hopefuls planning to campaign on climate change.

"We are calling on all students to join us to take action on our future!"

"There have been several people nominating me and I found out the first ones were maybe a month ago and then more people by time, but I think it is unbelievable", she said.
