Unvaccinated Kids Are Now Banned From Schools In Italy

Schools across Italy have been ordered to turn away unvaccinated children under strict new laws that went into effect Monday.

After the notorious study by Dr. Andrew Wakefield that linked measles vaccine to autism, there has been rise in anti-vaccination sentiments among parents.

It also fines parents of children between 6 and 16 years old about $560 if they can not prove their children have been vaccinated.

"Over the past year and a half, most parents have responsibly vaccinated their children and the number of vaccinated pupils has risen", Rusconi said. Students of that age reportedly can't be barred from classes.

The deadline for certification of vaccinations was March 10, but because it fell on a weekend it was extended to Monday.

"No vaccine, no school", Giulia Grillo, Italy's Minister of Health, told La Repubblica.

In Bologna, suspension letters were sent to the parents of 300 children.

The country's immunization rate dropped to below 80 percent against the World Health Organization's (WHO) requirement of 95 percent.

According to the Times, the current Italian government is working on a confusing plan to introduce "flexible obligation", in which immunization would only be mandatory if rates dipped below herd immunity levels.

Despite the purported success of the law, the Italian government has faced its share of criticism.

The two populist parties in power had faced accusations that they were pursuing anti-vaccination policies.

A long-discredited paper by Andrew Wakefield was behind much of the scare, but rumours around immunisation have continued to spread, leading to public health risks as not enough people are immune to such diseases.

Fears in the United Kingdom about vaccinations causing autism were recently disproved after the doctor making the claims was struck off the United Kingdom medical register for making the claims in a fraudulent paper which drew from a case study of only 12 children.
