Southwest shares initially traded higher on Wednesday before turning negative, losing as much as 3% once Trump announced the decision.

Lawmakers have also called for the planes to be grounded.

In a statement responding to Trump's emergency order, Southwest said it is working with passengers of canceled 737 Max 8 flights to rebook them onto other planes.

The boss of Ethiopian Airlines has called for the grounding of all Boeing's 737 Max 8 aircraft until it is established they are safe to fly.

Trump said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution, citing new evidence found at this weekend's deadly crash site in Ethiopia.

The Senate Commerce Committee also plans to hold a hearing as early as April.

The decision by Oman came first as the neighbouring United Arab Emirates initially just said it had joined USA authorities and Boeing Co.

The Chicago-based manufacturer issued a statement saying it still has "full confidence" in the plane. "We are doing everything we can to understand the cause of the accidents in partnership with the investigators, deploy safety enhancements and help ensure this does not happen again".

The groundings will have a far-reaching financial impact on Boeing, at least in the short term, said John Cox, a veteran pilot and CEO of Safety Operating Systems.

A slew of other countries have, however, grounded the jet after one of them took off from the capital of Ethiopia over the weekend and crashed shortly after takeoff, killing everyone on board. However, a more formal fix to redesign it won't be mandated until April, the FAA said Monday.

Lion Air ordered 222 Boeing Max planes, including 218 of the Max 8 model and four Max 9 planes.

"It's a awful, bad thing".

The Company would be materially adversely affected in the event of a mechanical or regulatory issue associated with the Boeing 737 aircraft type, whether as a result of downtime for part or all of the Company's fleet, increased maintenance costs, or because of a negative perception by the flying public. "They are working very, very hard right now, and hopefully they'll very quickly come up with the answer". The airline will try to pick up the slack with other aircraft, like this Boeing 737-700 seen in Salt Lake City.

American passenger Gail Henry was in the air flying from the Cayman Islands, where she lives, when she received a mobile alert about the grounding order.

The carriers use the commuter planes daily to ferry passengers on routes that include Vancouver-Calgary and Vancouver-Montreal as well as March break favourites such as Toronto-Puerto Vallarta and Vancouver-Honolulu.

It was the second time the FAA has halted flights of a Boeing plane in six years. Prior to that, the last such action halting flights on a fleet occurred in 1979 on the Douglas DC-10.
