Canadian police are on the hunt for four individuals, suspected of a defrauding a local bitcoin company via "double spend" attacks on Bitcoin ATMs.

According to the police profiling, one of the suspects has attacked in the Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Hamilton area, while the other took the Calgary area for the attacks.

The Calgary Police Service cybercrime team's investigation began in October 2018 when officers were tipped off to a major fraud involving transactions that target a Canadian bitcoin company.

Just under half of the transactions occurred in Calgary.

Police say the suspects were committing "double-spend" attacks and would visit a bitcoin kiosk and successfully withdraw money before cancelling their transaction before the bitcoin company would process the withdrawal.

"All four suspects are described as adult males and are believed to have in-depth knowledge or interest in cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. or blockchain technology", police said in a statement.

Besides Calgary, the suspects also conducted double-spend attacks on Bitcoin ATMs in cities like Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and more. Although the tools were not specifically created for such criminal activity, the tools essentially enable "stuck" transactions become "unstuck" when one pays an extra fee.

The second suspect is believed to be responsible for transactions that occurred in Calgary.

While bitcoin double-spending is not much heard of, it is not completely impossible.

Reportedly, 4 individuals, whose identities remain unknown, were aware of an exploit which meant that zero confirmation transactions were possible in these ATMs.
