Ontario will ban cellphones from class time, says education minister

Ontario to ban cellphones in classrooms Ontario Government To Ban All Cellphones From Classrooms Next Year

The Province of Ontario has made a decision to ban cell phones in classroom, aiming to increase focus in classrooms.

"Smartphones have become a huge distraction in classrooms, making it impossible for students to learn effectively", tweeted Premier Doug Ford on Tuesday morning.

"Last fall, we launched the largest-ever consultation on education in the history of Ontario".

Details of the new policy are expected in an official announcement within the next week.

A 2015 London School of Economics and Political Science paper found that "student performance in high stakes exams significantly increases" with a ban on mobile phones.

The school board does have policies within schools and classrooms to moderate phone use, but Davidson says it's important to have a conversation with student about when it's okay to use cell phones, instead of outright banning them.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) implemented a similar ban but it was reversed four years later.

"By banning cellphone use that distracts from learning, we are helping students to focus on acquiring the foundational skills they need like reading, writing and math", she said.

"Ontario's students need to be able to focus on their learning - not their cellphones", Thompson said in a statement.

Our Government will be introducing a ban on cellphones in the classroom. Exemptions include lesson plans that integrate phones and for students with medical and/or special needs. Results found that 97 per cent of respondents wanted some sort of control over cellphone use in class.

"I don't want to bring my electronics to school because, if it gets stolen or if it breaks, I don't want to be responsible for that", says Matteo Daher.

"It's not necessarily sustainable", he told CTV Edmonton on Tuesday.

That means students could use them in between classes, at lunch, and during after-school activities.

"What I think is problematic is when people use their phones to text their friends either within the classroom or outside the classroom-and would not be condoned for use [by] the teacher".

Teacher Ben Sichel is not in favour of a cellphone ban. "It's about recognizing that a school is a learning environment".
