Jussie Smollett pleads not guilty in alleged hate crime hoax

Is the Jussie Smollett Case Enough to Bring Down Judge to be assigned to Jussie Smollett case during court hearing today
Herman Weaver | 14 March, 2019, 20:43

"Empire" actor Jussie Smollett pleaded not guilty in an IL courtroom on Thursday to disorderly conduct charges over allegations he staged a hate crime and lied to police.

The judge will then likely ask Smollett to enter a plea.

Watkins granted Smollett's request to be allowed to leave the state meet with his lawyers in NY and California, but said the actor must give the court at least 48 hours' prior notice. He was in court Tuesday for a hearing to determine whether a judge should allow cameras in court.

He was charged in February with felony disorderly conduct. The charges all are Class 4 felonies, the lowest category of felony offense under IL law. The 36-year-old "Empire" actor was indicted last week for allegedly lying to Chicago police about a hate-crime attack and had been charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report.

Smollett has denied staging the attack and maintains his innocence. A lawyer for the brothers, Gloria Schmidt, claims it was for both. They say Smollett was unhappy about his salary and wanted to drum up publicity to help his career. Each of the 16 counts against him covers various alleged acts that Smollett falsely described to the officers-including that he was hit by two men, that they yelled racial and homophobic slurs and poured a chemical on him. Chicago police pushed back and accused Smollett of faking the letter as well.

"The fact of an indictment was not unexpected", the statement read. This redundant and vindictive indictment is nothing more than a desperate attempt to make headlines in order to distract from the internal investigation launched to investigate the outrageous leaking of false information by the Chicago Police Department and the shameless and illegal invasion of Jussie's privacy in tampering with his medical records. "The presumption of innocence, a bedrock in the search for justice, was trampled upon at the expense of Mr. Smollett and notably, on the eve of a Mayoral election", the statement added.

"Jussie Smollett knew that at the time of this transmission there was no reasonable ground for believing that such offenses had been committed", the indictment states.

Smollett returned to the small screen Thursday night on Empire, but his future on the Fox show remains up in the air.
