Federal prosecutors in Boston charged William (Rick) Singer, 58, with running the racketeering scheme through his Edge College & Career Network, which served a roster of clients, including CEOs and Hollywood actors.

Dressed in a blue fleece paired with black trousers, Huffman appeared downcast as she waited by an elevator in the building with what appeared to be two federal agents.

Actress Lori Loughlin will be allowed to return to Vancouver to complete her contracted work on various Hallmark Channel projects.

Her actor-husband William H. Macy later posted US$250,000 (S$339,000) bail.

The publication also reports Huffman was aware the arrest was set to happen and was set to "surrender on her own, but the feds saw it differently".

Prosecutors said that on a call with one parent, Singer summed up his business thusly: "What we do is help the wealthiest families in the USA get their kids into school ... my families want a guarantee".

She is among a group of Los Angeles parents who have been accused of trying to get their children into top colleges as part of a scheme that involved doctoring exam results and bribing college officials.

Actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin are among some 50 people charged in the massive scam to cheat on admission to elite U.S. universities that involved bribes, fraudulent test scores and even fake photographs.

Actress Lori Loughlin is free on a $1 million bond after appearing in federal court in Los Angeles on Wednesday in relation to her alleged participation inan elite college admission scheme.

Those involved could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Loughlin stood with her lawyer in the Los Angeles courtroom Wednesday and didn't speak except to answer "yes" to the judge's questions.

Dozens, including Huffman, the Emmy-winning star of ABC Studio's Desperate Housewives, were arrested by midday on Tuesday.

"For every student admitted through fraud, an honest and genuinely talented student was rejected", Lelling said.

Loughlin and Giannulli are accused of paying half-a-million dollars to have their two daughters, who are not rowers, designated as recruits for the University of Southern California crew team.

The colleges themselves are not targets, the prosecutor said.

John Vandemoor, a former Stanford University sailing coach, is also scheduled to plead guilty to racketeering conspiracy charges. A former Yale soccer coach had pleaded guilty before the documents went public and helped build the case against others.
