Users of Facebook, Messenger and Instagram are experiencing issues across the globe.

Facebook acknowledged the problems in a tweet at 1.49pm NY time Wednesday, saying, "We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".

On the website Downdetector.com, there were "problems at Facebook".

Facebook, on Twitter, last gave an update about ongoing outages on its platforms on it's platforms on Wednesday afternoon.

Other users said the outage was light relief. "We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible".

The Facebook outage has smashed the previous record in both length and severity.

While users could open the apps, they could not access many of their functions, and there were reports of people being unable to sign in to Tinder or Spotify through Facebook either.

"You make it sound as if it's the end of the world just because you can't be on Facebook".

A Facebook spokesman confirmed the partial outage, but did not provide an update.

It appears Aussies have a proclivity to call the cops when things aren't going in their favour, with reports that social media users are calling the police after Instagram and Facebook went down this morning.

As far as we're aware, Google is back to normal by now, and Facebook is still working to right its servers and connectivity.

The coordinated timing of the outages led to speculation Facebook had been hit by a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS), a common form of cyber attack that disrupts a site's services. On Instagram, users had trouble refreshing feeds, accessing the explore page, and posting new material.

Some folks get a warning that says Facebook is doing "required maintenance" while others are getting a full on error message with the note, "We're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can".
