The court document (in German) explains that the unnamed male passenger booked a return flight from Oslo to Seattle, with a layover in Frankfurt. On the return flight, the passenger did not catch the Frankfurt to Oslo leg of the journey and instead flew from Frankfurt to Berlin on a separate Lufthansa reservation.

There are risks that come with such travel however, with seasoned "tariff abusers" travelling with only cabin baggage, because hold luggage is usually checked through to its final destination. It's often dubbed "skiplagging".

Lufthansa - one of the world's largest airline companies - has been granted permission to appeal after an original ruling found in the passenger's favour, it has been reported.

The defendant asked the court to dismiss the airline's request, saying the airline's terms and conditions don't apply to his actions - and that Lufthansa's request to recalculate the fare was incomprehensible.

For example, a Toronto traveller who wants to go to Calgary may rather book a cheaper flight to Vancouver that has a layover in Calgary, and simply not get on the last leg to Vancouver.

"As this is a running court case, we do not comment on this case at this stage", a Lufthansa spokesperson told Simple Flying.

This isn't the only airline that has targetted those who use the travel trick.

Back in 2014, United Airlines and Orbitz filed a civil lawsuit last month against 22-year-old Aktarer Zaman, who founded the website Skiplagged.com, which helps travelers find cheaper flights by using the "hidden city" strategy. Read it here or follow BusinessInsider Australia on Facebook.

The case was thrown out in 2015 after the judge in the Northern District Court of IL said the court didn't have jurisdiction over the case because Zaman didn't live or do business in that city. Because missing a flight on goal could end up costing airlines dearly.
