BBC Washington producer Eleanor Montague said the protester, whose name remains unknown, had taunted other news teams, but Skeans "got the brunt of it". He added he had previously been "spat at" during a Trump rally. According to BBC, a Trump campaign official suggested that the man causing the violence was drunk.

Mr Trump saw the attack and confirmed Mr Skeans was well with a thumbs up after it happened.

"I'm very anxious that the hostility whipped up by Trump and some in conservative media will result in somebody getting hurt", Acosta wrote on Twitter.

He said security removed the man who jumped onto the media platform.

The president went to El Paso, on the U.S. border with Mexico, to campaign for a border wall, a divisive issue which caused the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Standing under a Finish the Wall banner, Donald Trump insisted that large portions of the project are already under construction.

He then disappears from the frame as the screen cuts to black, with the sound of a scuffle heard in the background. When it's righted, we can see a man wearing a red MAGA hat being restrained by another man.

The BBC's Washington correspondent Gary O'Donoghue said his colleague Ron Skeans was "fine" despite the "incredibly violent attack". "Fortunately our cameraman is fine, he is made of stern stuff", Mr O'Donoghue told the Today programme.

"This is a constant feature of these rallies - a goading of the crowds against the media", he said.

Washington Examiner reporter Gabby Morrongiello, who shot video of the incident, explained that members in the press pen were trying to record a group of African-American students who were protesting Trump by standing together with interlocked hands.

Just last week, Trump tweeted: "Someday the fake news media will turn honest and report that Donald J. Trump was actually a great candidate".

Trump told the crowds inside El Paso County Coliseum that 69,000 people had signed up to attend.

Mitt Romney, a senator from Utah and former Republican presidential nominee, argued previous year that Trump's tactics are detrimental to democracy.
