Growing list of Democrats vying for 2020 presidential nod

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar Running for President Race for the White House: Midwestern senator throws her hat in the ring

With the announcement, Klobuchar joined a growing roster of Democrats running for the nomination to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020.

Hot chocolate, biscuits and cider were also provided for the event on the bank of the MS river. Campaign aides handed out hot cider and cookies. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Cory Booker (N.J.), Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) and Kamala Harris (Calif.), as well as Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii) and Obama-era Cabinet member Julián Castro. As many as a dozen other Democrats have announced campaigns or are considering joining the race.

There is also widespread speculation that former Vice President Joe Biden could enter the field.

But her legislative record has drawn criticism from both the GOP and some fellow Democrats.

Klobuchar's speech on Sunday will lean heavily into her Minnesota roots, including the grit that it takes to draw people to a political event in sub-freezing weather. Many have claimed that Trump is "ignorant" about climate change, with his 2012 tweet about global warming being a Chinese creation to render USA manufacturing as "non-competitive", adding to the netizen's belief.

Marilyn Bessler said that Klobuchar's measured approach to finding compromise in politics is an asset that will help her stand out in an increasingly polarizing political climate, and they tout her record of keeping political discourse positive. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota announces she is entering the race for president during a rally, February 10, 2019, at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The margin was much larger Hillary Clinton's 1.5-point victory in Minnesota's presidential race in 2016.

But her bipartisan approach may not stand her in such good stead in a party now dominated by the progressive left.

"She has many staff who have been with her for years ― including her Chief of Staff and her State Director, who have worked for her for 5 and 7 years respectively ― and many who have gone on to do incredible things, from working in the Obama Administration (over 20 of them) to running for office to even serving as the Agriculture Commissioner for Minnesota".

Former Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson, a Republican, once called Klobuchar "the great avoider".

"For every worker, farmer, dreamer, builder - for every American - I'm running for you", Klobuchar said.

Before she was a senator, she was the Hennepin County Attorney for eight years. He was elected to the US Senate in 2013, the first African-American senator ever from that state. She's also seen as a rising star in the Democratic National Party.

She never mentioned President Trump by name, but said she would not conduct "foreign policy by tweet".

Klobuchar, who gained national attention after speaking at the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh last fall, has served in the Senate since 2007. Other staffers have defended Klobuchar's leadership style.

Klobuchar, 58, is known as a straight-shooting, pragmatist willing to work with Republicans, making her one of the Senate's most productive members at passing legislation.

A light but steady snow fell during the event at Boom Island Park, obscuring the Minneapolis skyline behind the stage.
