Sentence for McArthur means he'll never see daylight

Serial killer Bruce McArthur sentenced to life in prison Serial killer Bruce McArthur sentenced to 25 years in prison
Ellis Copeland | 11 February, 2019, 02:58

Last year McArthur waved his right to a preliminary hearing and last week he pleaded guilty to all eight counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Dean Lisowick, Soroush Mahmudi, Skandaraj Navaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi, and Kirushna Kanagaratnam.

Parole eligibility was the only question for McMahon to settle as first-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence, and the judge said McArthur's age and guilty plea were factors in his decision.

McArthur pleaded guilty to eight charges of first degree murder between 2010 and 2017.

Crown attorney Michael Cantlon, whose prosecutorial team compared McArthur to Robert Pickton earlier this week, said he wouldn't comment on the sentence, though he noted that the judge has his "utmost respect".

Bruce McArthur, who admitted to the killings last month, will be in his 90s before he is eligible for parole from eight concurrent 25-year sentences.

The details of the case are so brutal, the crimes so depraved, that the headlines at times obscured the fact that eight men - Skandaraj Navaratnam, Majeed Kayhan, Abdulbasir Faizi, Soroush Mahmudi, Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam, Dean Lisowick, Selim Esen and Andrew Kinsman - had been killed.

The remains of an eighth victim were later discovered in a ravine behind the property.

McMahon also says he has no doubt McArthur would have continued to kill if he wasn't arrested by police a year ago.

There is now an independent review of how police treat missing persons cases, after outcry over how McArthur was able to kill undetected for seven years.

Three dead, 12 injured in Istanbul apartment building collapse
Rescue workers are seen at the scene where an eight-storey apartment building collapsed in Istanbul, Turkey , Feb. 7, 2019. Authorities said the top three floors had been illegally built and the cause of the collapse is still under investigation.

"All or most of the victims were vulnerable individuals who were lured to their death", McMahon said.

"The accused has saved the family, friends, and community at large from enduring a graphic public trial that would have been a nightmare for everyone", he said.

The Rev. Deana Dudley of the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto said in court that McArthur's arrest would have a "deep and lasting" impact on the LGBTQ community, according to CTV.

In January 2018, when police entered McArthur's apartment, they found a young man bound to the bed.

Now, with the trial over, advocates want to put the focus back on why so many died before police cracked the case.

Because numerous facts presented at the hearing were so lurid, prosecutors cautioned people against remaining in court to hear them. He says there's no evidence to suggest a serial killer is walking the streets of Toronto. Police later found a folder on McArthur's computer labelled with the man's name that contained images of him.

McArthur posed their bodies for photographs, with numerous pictures featuring the same fur coat.

But prosecutors offered no insights into what drove McArthur, a father of two who left his wife in 2000, to become a serial killer. He thanked both the prosecution and the defence, noting "it is not easy to defend a serial killer".

Rev. Deana Dudley, of Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, says work must be done in order to restore a sense of security.
