For a long time now there has been a lot of talk about e-waste and how to deal with the magnanimity of the problem.

The Yomiuri Shimbun The Tokyo metropolitan government and Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced Friday that they are on track to collect the recycled metal needed to produce all medals for the 2020 Games from the remnants of mobile phones and other small electronic devices.

Britain, which has never won a medal in Olympic basketball, claimed 67 medals, including 27 golds, at the 2016 Rio Games. 2020 witll mark the first year with Olympic medals designed 100% from recycled material. On the organising committee's website, there's a detailed explanation of how they have gone about doing this.

Oilers fire Chiarelli; name K. Gretzky interim
This week, he signed goaltender Mikko Koskinen to a three-year contract extension worth $4.5 million a season. Edmonton had missed the playoffs in nine consecutive seasons before replacing Craig MacTavish with Chiarelli.

That plan has now taken another step to becoming a reality, as the committee says people and companies in Japan have shown great support in donating unwanted or discarded gadgets. "The medals will be produced after the gold, silver and bronze elements have been extracted by the smelting contractors". There's also a detailed classification of the metals collected.

The target for bronze was met last June, while the organisers had more than 90% of the gold and 85% of the silver by October. The Tokyo 2020 Medal Project, which will end on March 31, 2019, has accumulated roughly 47,488 tons of e-waste for the sustainable medals. In October previous year, they already had 30.3kg kg of gold and 4 100kg of silver, with them reaching their bronze target in June already (2 700kg).

Over $3 million worth of metals have been collected from more than 5 million devices, most of which were handed in at NTT Docomo stores.
