Microsoft Really Wants Internet Explorer to Die

Internet Explorer Stop using Internet Explorer warns Microsoft's own security chief
Troy Mann | 10 February, 2019, 20:42

In a post called "The perils of using Internet Explorer as your default browser", Microsoft's Chris Jackson said everyone should stop using Internet Explorer.

Microsoft, the company, which first developed Internet Explorer in 1995, is no longer supporting new development for the web browser.

A Microsoft cybersecurity expert suggested in a recent blog post that you really shouldn't use Internet Explorer as your default browser.

We are not supporting new web standards for this, while many sites work excellent, large and developers are not experimenting and testing for Internet Explorer these days. Aiming at enterprise customers, Jackson tried to explain that the companies should know the concept of "technical debt" as they are paying for extended support of older software.

It is no secret that Internet Explorer is not a reliable browser.

The Redmond, Washington-based technology giant put an end to the Internet Explorer brand almost four years ago when it introduced Microsoft Edge as its modern browser in Windows 10.

The landscape has seen a considerable shift since then- Chrome is now the dominant browser, in terms of market share, followed by Safari in a distant second place, and then Firefox, according to both StatCounter and Net Applications.

By the looks of things, Microsoft is just trying to pave the way for its new Chromium-based browser, despite this project still in its early days.

Jackson doesn't even refer to Internet Explorer as a browser in the blog post. Rather than spending resources to make them compatible with the new-age browsers, they continue to use them because they were created to be used with it. "More effort on the part of IT teams was required to get to standards mode, which made "getting modern" an opt-in choice".

However, it struggled in the face of competition, and in May 2012 it was announced that Google's Chrome overtook Internet Explorer as the most used browser worldwide. Looking all the way back to Internet Explorer 6, the very concept of "standards mode" vs "quirks mode" comes from this "easy button" approach.
