Paris: The last four years were the hottest since global temperature records began, the United Nations confirmed on Wednesday in an analysis that it said was a "clear sign of continuing long-term climate change".

They also report that during 2018 the global temperature was 0.83 Celsius degrees above the 20th century average and that ninth of the 10 warmest years occurred since 2005.

The new report said the world was on track to have average global temperatures rise to 3 degrees Celsius by 2100, as record levels of man-made greenhouse gas emissions, mainly from burning fossil fuels, is trapping more heat in the Earth's atmosphere.

The records also show that the annual temperature of the Old Continent increased at an average rate of 0.12 Celsius degrees per decade since 1910, although it has nearly quadrupled to 0.43 Celsius since 1981.

Americans escaped the worst of it last year though; while the rest of the planet cooked, the US experienced only its 14th-warmest year. In addition, mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets continued to contribute to sea level rise, and increased temperatures contributed to longer and more intense fire seasons, ranging from California to Australia.

The participants will include Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and Deke Ardnt, chief of the global monitoring branch of NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information, NASA officials said in a statement. Deathly record lows are real in the U.S., but don't be fooled by the cooling that we have been witnessing, global warming is real also.

The human toll also was high, with 247 killed and many more injured in weather and climate disasters.

Arndt says 2018 "was an exclamation point, I think, on a trend that we're seeing toward more big rain, particularly in the eastern United States".

The NASA and NOAA reports are consistent with analyses by other governments, including the Japan Meteorological Agency and the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, both of which also concluded that 2018 was the fourth-warmest year on record. That would be warmer than the last four years. The release of the NASA/NOAA report was delayed by the USA government shutdown.

But the US did get soaked in 2018, says Deke Arndt, a climate scientist with NOAA.
