Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, was arrested on Thursday for "targeting" and kidnapping 13-year-old girl Jayme and horrifically shooting dead her mom and dad in their Barron, Wisconsin home on October 15.

Jayme was found on Thursday in the small town of Gordon, some 70 miles (112km) from her home in Barron.

Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, is being held on two counts of first-degree homicide and one count of kidnapping, police said on Friday.

Investigators have yet to comment on what Jayme endured during her 88 days in captivity.

Jayme's grandfather, Robert Naiberg, said in a telephone interview on Saturday the only thing the family knows for sure is that no one knew Patterson. "I'd probably faint because I would be so happy to see her", Tuders said.

He said the girl had been found in the town of Gordon, about 100 kilometres north of Barron, where she had lived with her parents.

Naiberg said his daughter called him with the news, saying Jayme reported having been held by "a guy in the woods" but was able to escape. [But] he knew what he was doing.

Here's what we know so far about the case.

Attorneys for Patterson called the affair "a very tragic situation" and said they were relying on the court system to treat him fairly. Authorities suspect he was driving around, trying to find the escaped teen.

Patterson grew up in Gordon, a sprawling township of 645 people tucked into the snowy evergreen forests about 35 miles (55 kilometers) south of Lake Superior. It's wild country; roadside signs admonish motorists to share the pavement with ATVs. Prosecutors anticipate filing homicide and kidnapping charges against him on Monday.

A 21-year-old man killed a Wisconsin couple in a scheme to kidnap their teenage daughter, then held the girl captive for almost three months before she managed to escape and reach safety as he drove around looking for her, authorities said.

Jayme's ordeal began on October 15, when a 911 hangup call was placed from her home and a dispatcher reported hearing people yelling in the background.

Patterson's parents divorced in 2008, according to online court records.

Kasinskas said that three officers initially arrived at her home. "It was like I was seeing a ghost", Mr Kaskinskas told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"I was terrified, but I didn't want to show her that", Nutter, a social worker who spent years working in child protection, told The Associated Press on Friday.

"No matter what may unfold in her story let's all try to remember that this young woman has SURVIVED and whatever other details may surface the most important will still remain that she is alive", Smart wrote.

The woman began knocking on a neighbour's door shouting: "This is Jayme Closs, call 911!"

"What a great feeling to have her home". He had no contact with any of the Closs family that we've been able to determine at this time. "It will be a long road but we are family strong and we love this little girl so much!"

Another Aunt, Sue Allard, said she could barely express her joy after learning the news.

Elizabeth Smart, who was held captive for nine months as a teenager after her 2002 abduction in Utah, posted a photo of Closs on Instagram, praising the "miracle" that she had been found.

"She said that this person's name was Jake Patterson, 'he killed my parents and took me,"' said another neighbour, Kristin Kasinskas.

He added: 'She did not talk about why or how.

"It appears he concealed her from other people. his friends", Fitzgerald said.
