According to official statistics, there were 11,187 road accidents in 2017 that left 750 people dead and 7,999 injured from a population of 11.1 million.

A Frenchman, a German woman and two Argentine women were among the dead, along with three Cubans, Venceremos newspaper said.

The bus was travelling from Baracoa to the capital, Havana.

Five crash victims are still said to be in critical condition as medical staff in the country battle to save their lives.

Other tourists were from Holland, Great Britain, France and Mexico.

The Cubans were two men, aged 32 and 47, and a 34-year-old woman.

Radio Guantánamo said it had spoken to the driver of the bus who said he lost control of the bus in wet conditions on a bendy section of the road between Baracoa and Guantánamo.

The UK Foreign Office was "seeking information from the Cuban authorities" and that it was "ready to assist any British people who require our help", a spokesperson told the BBC.

On top of the road being wet and winding, Cuba's highways are also known for being poorly lit, too narrow, and riddled with potholes.
