Prosecutors also filed charges Friday against Nissan and Ghosn aide Greg Kelly over the additional three years of under-reporting pay.

The 64-year-old was charged with aggravated breach of trust in relation to the alleged transfer of private investment losses to Nissan amid the 2008 global financial crisis, and for understating his remuneration in the three fiscal years through March last year.

Prosecutors say Ghosn underreported his income by about 5 billion yen ($44 million) over five years through 2015. His lawyers applied for bail, while acknowledging the slim chance of success. Prosecutors have the right to appeal to a court to extend the detention.

Otsuru said his team was applying for bail to have Ghosn released. Ghosn has denied all of the allegations against him.

"I have been wrongly accused and unfairly detained based on meritless and unsubstantiated accusations", the once-revered vehicle titan told the court.

At the court, Ghosn said his actions were backed by managers inside the company as well as external lawyers.

The former chairman of the Nissan Motor Co, Carlos Ghosn, was indicted on two new charges of financial misconduct on Friday, adding to existing legal challenges. Ghosn has been detained since his arrest previous year.

"I am pleading with the Japanese authorities to provide us with any information at all about my husband's health", Carole Ghosn said.

"We are fearful and very anxious his recovery will be complicated while he continues to endure such harsh conditions and unfair treatment", she said in a statement.

According to the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission, both Ghost and Nissan are alleged to have under-reported Ghosn's pay package in the company's securities reports presented to Japanese regulators. His temperature had returned to normal by Friday, Otsuru's office said.

The latest legal twist pulls Ghosn deeper into the Japanese criminal system, which grants authorities sweeping powers to keep suspects locked up for an extended period.

Visits from lawyers, family and friends are strictly controlled by prosecutors in Japan, making it hard for suspects to establish a defense or give their side of the story to the media.

Nissan later said it remained committed to the alliance.

Ghosn, who appeared much thinner than before his arrest, came down with a fever the day after his court appearance, but has since recovered, Ohtsuru, the lawyer, said.

The French government has stood by Ghosn so far, saying he must benefit from the presumption of innocence.

Jose Munoz, widely considered as a close ally to Ghosn and a possible successor to lead the automaking partnership between Nissan and France's Renault SA, had been a "person of interest" in Nissan's widening internal investigation.

He also faces questioning in connection with alleged attempts to transfer personal investment losses to Nissan and making unnecessary payments to a Saudi associate from company funds.
