Bungie Announces It’s Splitting With Activision But Keeping "Destiny"

In one of the most unexpected moves in quite some time, Bungie announced that it will be exclusively publishing the Destiny franchise after splitting with Activision. Now, under new leadership, Bungie is calling time on its partnership and has announced it is splitting from Activision after just over eight years - less than the originally-contracted decade.

In a statement, Activision said, "Today, we're announcing plans for Bungie to assume full publishing rights and responsibilities for the Destiny franchise". Bungie further stated, "With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects".

Bungie seems over ecstatic that the Destiny franchise may have more room to grow without Activision's restrictive schedule.

There's no specified date as to when Bungie's transition to full independence will be completed, but it's "already underway in its early stages".

Thank you so much for your continued support. We know that new adventures await us all on new worlds filled with mystery, adventure, and hope. The popular opinion is that Activision's oversight on Destiny 2 caused most of its major issues, hence its unpopularity with the community.

Forsaken has been something of a renaissance and delivered what players wanted from the second game's launch, which must have compelled Bungie to cut the chord.

That it's taken this long for the pair to part ways is the only real surprise.

Activision apparently required a commitment to an annual launch cycle for the game, which in turn forced Bungie into development constraints that the company apparently wasn't happy about, according to Kotaku.

The note also points out that the original plan was to release sequels every two years and that Bungie's failure to deliver this was one of the reasons for the falling out with Activision. This will include more seasonal experiences in the upcoming months. The team seems committed to continuing Destiny and making it better than ever, but there's also the $100m deal they signed with NetEase past year to produce an original IP - of which se still know nothing about.
