President Trump says he’s cutting off FEMA funding to California over fires

Trump turns up the heat on Pelosi, says he is cutting off funds for CA wildfires President Trump says he’s cutting off FEMA funding to California over fires

The President has since deleted the original tweet and reposted it with the proper spelling of "forest" - removing what Twitter users couldn't resist teasing was a reference to iconic 1994 Oscar-winning film starring Tom Hanks, Forrest Gump.

"Unless they get their act together, which is unlikely, I have ordered FEMA to send no more money", Trump said, adding that it was a "disgraceful situation". "I would under no circumstances say that Cal Fire and the state of California are neglecting this", he said, referring to the state fire agency.

In his initial tweet, Trump spelled the word "forest" with two Rs, apparently not in reference to Forrest Gump. State officials have also pointed out that more than half of the California's forests are owned and managed by federal agencies. "No matter how many people with rakes they deploy, forests are going to burn because of longer, hotter summers due to climate chaos". The state legislature has already set aside $200 million for managing forests, according to The Sacramento Bee.

Last April, Trump falsely stated that the California government is diverting river water into the Pacific Ocean that could be used to fight forest fires, but he also signaled he will fast-track federal help.

President Donald Trump revived his criticism of California on Wednesday, insisting again the state has mismanaged forest management programs and allowed wildfires to rage. "The people of CA ― folks in Paradise ― should not be victims to partisan bickering".

Insurance claims from the recent spate of California wildfires, including one ranked as the most deadly and destructive in state history, have topped $9 billion and are expected to grow, the state insurance commissioner reported last month.

This isn't the first time the US President has lashed out at California for its handling of the destructive wildfires.

Trump's tweet today comes as he faces heat over the ongoing government shutdown, in which FEMA is partially affected. Newsom asked for $105 million to improve wildfire safety on Tuesday.

Newsom noted that California has pledged $1 billion over the next five years to ramp up its efforts, which include clearing dead trees that can serve as fuel.

California was devastated by a series of rapidly moving fires late a year ago.
