In what can be considered as one of the strangest incidents to begin the new year, a man in California, United States was caught on surveillance video licking a doorbell for nearly three hours.

Cops also reckon he was caught on camera taking a piss in the front yard.

Homeowner and doorbell-licking victim Sylvia Dungan told KION Monday that the home security system on her home in Salinas' Rossi Rico neighborhood went off around 5:00 a.m.

"I was asleep and awoke to what seemed like a nightmare", she said.

The weird event was caught on the Salinas, California, home's surveillance camera Saturday morning, according to KION.

Police said Arroyo's long night of odd behaviour began about 2am, when he approached the house and stared straight into the camera of the home's doorbell surveillance system.

"We were pleasantly surprised".

Arroyo faces possible misdemeanor charges of petty theft, prowling and violation of probation, Miguel Cabrera of the Salinas Police Department told The Post.

Police say it's no laughing matter, because the man spent hours licking the doorbell and walking around the family's yard.

Authorities say the footage has helped them identify the man, but he is not in custody.

"I thought I've seen it all, but this takes the cake", said a neighbor.

Arroyo is said to have gone to a neighbor's house as well.

"You kind of laugh about it afterward, because technically he didn't harm anybody", said mom Sylvia Dungan.
