FACT CHECK: Trump oversells wall as a solution to drugs

Here’s how Trump’s shutdown hurts millions of Americans who don’t even work for the federal government Trump demands funding to end border 'crisis' in US TV address

Instead, Mr Trump used the president's most symbolic and powerful perch - traditionally reserved for times of war or calls for national unity - to rattle off familiar statistics, renew complaints about Democratic criticism of his plan to build a wall on the Mexican border and reprise ominous anecdotes of brutal crimes committed by people he said were in the country illegally.

He said hundreds more people are killed each year by drugs, particularly heroin, most of which, he said, comes into the United States through the southwestern border.

The president said children illegally brought into the USA are "used as human pawns by vicious coyotes and ruthless gangs", while women and children are "the biggest victims by far of our broken system".

In 2013, Senate Democrats voted for a failed immigration bill that provided roughly $46 billion for a number of border security measures - including new fencing - but that legislation would have created a pathway to citizenship for some of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the USA illegally.

"This is the cycle of human suffering that I am determined to end". More than 38 million Americans who rely on food stamps could see them reduced should the shutdown continue into next month. It could also provide an easy, face-saving path from the political quagmire, though Democrats have said they would challenge an emergency declaration in court.

To recap, in late December Donald Trump said he would refuse to sign any spending bill from Congress that didn't include over $5 billion to put towards building a wall at the southern USA border, effectively shutting down the US government for the time being.

The president used a series of murders to highlight why "illegal aliens" need to be kept out, from a police officer killed on Boxing Day to a veteran who was raped and murdered in California.

"I've held the hands of the weeping mothers and embraced the grief-stricken fathers".

He said the designs feature metal bars that create a "pinch point" when activated, often by people trying to get into the boxes. He said the locks would have to be robust, however, so they couldn't be opened with a crow bar.

"How much more American blood will be shed before Congress does its job?"

As almost 800,000 federal workers still go without pay, the president remained at an impasse with congressional Democrats as he prepared to head to Capitol Hill to huddle with members of his own party behind closed doors on Wednesday. A Politico poll found that 47% of voters blame Trump, not Democrats, for the shutdown.

"This is a choice between right and wrong, justice and injustice", he finished.

Now Democratic leadership including House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer are demanding that the networks follow Trump's address with a rebuttal by Democrats.

"The President is rejecting these bipartisan Bills, which would reopen government, over his obsession with forcing American taxpayers to waste billions of dollars on an expensive and ineffective wall, a wall he always promised Mexico would pay for", Ms Pelosi said.

Oval Office addresses are usually created to speak to the widest audience possible - to rally the nation rather than divide it, to build as broad a coalition as possible for the task ahead.

Mr Schumer accused Mr Trump of trying to "govern by temper tantrum". How and when did the conditions at the border reach the point of becoming a humanitarian and national security crisis such that they demanded a nationally televised address and maybe a national emergency?

He concluded: "The symbol of America should be the Statue of Liberty, not a 30-foot wall".
