Heather Unruh, a former TV news anchor in New England, held a press conference in November 2017 saying her son had been sexually assaulted by Spacey.

The "House of Cards" star had asked that his lawyers represent him at the hearing, but Judge Thomas Barrett declined, forcing Spacey to appear before him at 11:00 am (1600 GMT).

Spacey, sporting a white and purple floral printed shirt and purple tie under a taupe coat, smiled but did not respond to reporters as he entered the court.

Jackson, has sought to poke holes in the case, noting that the teenager didn't immediately report the allegations.

Spacey was sacked from his hit Netflix drama House of Cards and director Ridley Scott edited him out of his Getty family drama All the Money in the World and replaced the Oscar victor with Christopher Plummer.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

The victim said that is when he left. The judge approved the request.

The civil attorney for the accuser said in a statement ahead of the hearing that his client is "leading by example".

When the doors opened, more than two dozen journalists packed the courtroom hours before Spacey was scheduled to appear.

Unruh's son told police Spacey had bought him several rounds of beer and whiskey and said at one point, "Let's get drunk", according to charging documents.

The actor's request was filed by his attorneys last week, who argued "presence will amplify the negative publicity already generated in connection with this case".

Garabedian is not a part of the criminal case against Spacey. The teen said that Spacey assaulted him, she said.

At a probable cause hearing in Nantucket County Court on December 20, Spacey's attorney said the accuser's story had inconsistencies and even acted out the incident to illustrate his point, according to audio of the hearing, which was first published by The Boston Globe.

Spacey has also faced other allegations.

Spacey vanished from public view until Christmas Eve, when he released a video reprising his House Of Cards role as President Frank Underwood.

The Metropolitan Police is investigating six allegations of assault in London and Gloucester from 1996 to 2013, but will not publicly confirm that Spacey is the suspect or whether they have made any attempt to interview him.
