Passengers wait at the North Terminal at London Gatwick Airport, south of London, on 20 December 2018 after all flights were grounded due to drones flying over the airfield.

The step to withdraw military equipment - thought to include the Israeli-developed Drone Dome system - is interesting, to say the least.

Major global airports across the world have contacted Gatwick bosses for advice following last month's drone disruption.

The airports, which are the two busiest in the United Kingdom, have invested in military-grade equipment created to jam drone signals.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: 'The military capability has now been withdrawn from Gatwick.

The system, which is said to have a range of several miles, uses four radars to give 360-degree detection in order to identify and track targets.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling met police, aviation and defence chiefs on Thursday to discuss the issue, the report said.

He admitted there may have been some "confusion" caused when his force launched its own drones in the hunt for the rogue craft. Skylock, the company that manufactures the technology, is one of many now specializing in detecting and downing intruder drones by "jamming" them, or disrupting their frequencies.

But Mr York added he was "absolutely certain" that a drone was flying near the runways during the three days of disruption.

Sussex Police, meanwhile, is believed to be continuing to pursue a number of lines of enquiry with a number of suspects in its sights.

"I think the fact that we have found two drones so far as a result of this does show the extent of the search that has been carried out".

Heathrow has also recently purchased cutting-edge technology, according to The Times, as airports across the world weigh up how to respond to a similar threat.

More than 140,000 passengers had their flights either cancelled or delayed during 36 hours of chaos at the airport.
