Aurobindo Pharma USA Inc., an American unit of the India-based generic pharmaceuticals manufacturer, Aurobindo Pharma Ltd., is now in the news for recalling around 80 lots of medicines used for treating heart failure and high blood pressure, from the US market.

"The risk of some sort sort of serious outcome from high blood pressure right now is the higher risk than the potential carcinogen effect of the contaminant", says Michael Ganio, PharmD, director of pharmacy practice and quality at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in Bethesda, Maryland. In all of these cases of blood pressure drug recalls, it is important for consumers to consult their physician before discontinuing use of these drugs.

The FDA explains in its bulletin that the carcinogen discovered in the tablets is NDEA (N-nitrosodiethylamine), which can be a byproduct of industrial manufacturing and has been linked to cancer in the past.

The Food and Drug Administration announced Aurobindo Pharma USA, Inc.is voluntarily recalling 80 lots of Amlodipine Valsartan Tablets, Valsartan HCTZ Tablets, and Valsartan Tablets.

The recall notification states that the pills contain above the daily accepted levels of N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA).
