SpaceX launch scrubbed for fourth time; next try Sunday

However, Elon Musk's commercial space flight company successfully completed its first mission for the USA military on Sunday.

The Falcon 9 rocket conveying a generally $500 million Global Positioning System satellite worked by Lockheed Martin Corp lifted off from Cape Canaveral at 8:51 a.m. nearby time (1351 GMT).

The company used a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket for the launch. This was due to weather and technical issues.

The Falcon 9 carried to orbit 64 spacecraft, in particular 15 Micro satellites and 49 cubesats, for 35 customers from 17 countries.

"The first GPS III launch marks a significant milestone for the GPS constellation as well as our partnership with SpaceX", said Col. Robert Bongiovi, Launch Enterprise director.

Vespucci's nickname honors Italian cartographer and explorer Amerigo Vespucci, after whom North and South America were named.

"In the coming days, GPS III SV01 will use its liquid apogee engines to climb into its operational orbit about 12,550 miles above the earth".

Donald Trump insists shutdown will not end unless Congress funds border wall
Hundreds of thousands of government employees have been put out of work by the dispute or are forced to do their jobs without pay. Democrats said they were open to proposals that don't include a wall, which Schumer said is costly and ineffective.

The next year, SpaceX won an Dollars 83 million Air Force contract to launch the GPS III satellite, which will have a lifespan of 15 years.

The rocket blasted off from Space Launch Complex 4 at the air force base at 10:34 a.m. PST (1834 GMT).

Mr. Caldwell added: "By this time next year, we expect to also have a second GPS III on orbit and users should be receiving signals from this first satellite".

Lockheed Martin is building the new satellites outside Denver. SpaceX's launch team, around 35 minutes before launch, approved the super-chilled kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants loading into the rocket. It is but one of 32 planned GPS III satellites that will replace older ones now in orbit.

The satellite, designated GPS III SV01, is the first of an entirely new design of GPS satellite which will help the Air Force modernize today's GPS constellation with new technology and advanced capabilities.

SpaceX has completed 21 launches in this year, which is more than the 18 launches last year, in what's been a banner year for the company.
