Virgin Galactic Reaches Space

Virgin Galactic could soon reach space for the first time Virgin Galactic First Flight to Space Imminent

Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo carrier plane takes off with the SpaceShipTwo VSS Unity from Mojave Air and Space Port ahead of the fourth powered test flight of the passenger space plane on December 13, 2018.

Virgin Galactic marked a major milestone today in that race, as its spaceship made it to a peak height, or apogee, of 82.7km, after taking off attached to an airplane from Mojave, California, then firing its rocket motors to reach new heights. Virgin Galactic officials say recent research favors the lower number.

The spacecraft with two test pilots at the controls quickly hurtled upward and out of sight from viewers on the ground.

Thursday's test flight "saw a 60 second planned rocket motor burn which propelled VSS Unity to nearly three times the speed of sound and to an apogee of 51.4 miles", the company explained in its news release.

Virgin's first experimental spacecraft failed during a 2014 test flight, with one of the pilots losing his life.

The company received an abundance of criticism focused on whether the danger of space tourism made the rewards worthwhile, but after following recommendations set forth by the National Transportation Safety Board's report on the incident along with further design and safety enhancements, they forged ahead to make today's event a reality.

Sir Richard added: "Space is Virgin territory!"

The passenger rocket reached a height beyond the altitude at which space is said to begin, marking a huge leap in the firm's space programme.

The company is squared up to compete directly with Blue Origin, the space company founded by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos in 2000 to offer suborbital tourism flights.

"SpaceShipTwo, welcome to space", tweeted Virgin Galactic.

Virgin Galactic considers that altitude to be the threshold of space because it's defined that way by the Air Force and other US agencies, although others have long considered the boundary to be higher.

SpaceShipTwo took off at the Mojave test centre in California on Thursday. The pilots fired up the rocket for 30 seconds, keeping the nose pointed up, and reached Mach 1.87 before coasting to an altitude of 84,271 feet and gliding back to a landing.

Mr Whitesides said a review of the flight's data would last into the new year, and there would be more test flights.

These flights aren't the same as an orbital flight to space - which involves actually sending people around the Earth before coming back home.

Over 600 people from more than 50 countries have reserved their places, at $250,000 dollars (£200,000) a seat, on the six-passenger rocket. These missions will allow customers to experience a few minutes of weightlessness and also see the curvature of Earth against the blackness of space, company representatives have said.

The spacecraft was piloted by Mark Stucky and former NASA astronaut Frederick "CJ" Sturckow. During the test flight, it carried four NASA research payloads and a mannequin name Annie as a stand-in passenger.
