Researchers reveal potentially huge cancer breakthrough: a 10-minute universal test

The blood test could help with research into heart disease and Alzheimer's disease Scientists develop 'holy grail' blood test that detects cancer in 10 minutes

Currently, the test detects only the presence of cancer, not the type of cancer. After a series of tests the team hit on the new test for cancer: suspected DNA is added to water containing tiny gold nanoparticles that turn the water pink; if cancer cell DNA is added it sticks to the nanoparticles in a manner that the water retains original colour, if health cell DNA is added it binds differently turning the water blue.

Australian researchers said Wednesday that they have created a test that can detect cancer quickly and easily, with the goal of revolutionizing early detection.

Scientists are still working on developing this wonder-test, but once their work is completed, the world would be able to have a different approach to the detection of cancer. A test that detects one cancer may not work on another. The research says, "This methylation landscape that we referred to as Methylscape is displayed by most cancer types, thus may serve as a universal cancer biomarker".

The testing was developed by researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia. They studied patterns of cancerous DNA and healthy DNA, finding that the latter is sticky against metal surfaces.

Co-author Dr. Laura Carrascosa said: "There's been a big hunt to find whether there is some distinct DNA signature that is just in the cancer and not in the rest of the body". The researchers found the signature in multiple types of breast cancer as well as in prostate and colorectal cancer, and lymphoma. The team found that methyl group clusters placed in a solution prompted cancer DNA fragments to fold into 3D nanostructures.

"The levels and patterns of tiny molecules called methyl groups that decorate DNA are altered dramatically by cancer - these methyl groups are key for cells to control which genes are turned on and off".

"Virtually every piece of cancerous DNA we examined had this highly predictable pattern", said Dr. Trau, who is the senior author of a new paper that describes how the pattern could lead to an entirely new approach to cancer diagnostics.

The quick and simple test sees DNA extracted from a tissue sample before it is mixed with water, to which gold nanoparticles are added. The group, which discovered a unique DNA nanostructure that is present in various types of cancer, published their research in Nature Communications and a press release.

The researcher added that "it looks really interesting as an incredibly simple universal marker of cancer". But if the technique is further developed, perhaps the most immediate potential application would be monitoring existing cancer patients for disease recurrence, she said.
