Trump to nominate State Department spokeswoman as next United Nations ambassador

Trump to name Heather Nauert as next U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Trump expected to pick State spokeswoman for UN ambassador

President Donald Trump will nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as USA ambassador to the United Nations, a source familiar with his decision said on Thursday, tapping someone with no prior policy or political experience to deal with some of the world's thorniest issues.

Two administration officials confirmed Trump's plans.

"I expect to continue to speak out from time to time on important public policy matters, but I will surely not be a candidate for any office in 2020", she wrote.

Nikki Haley had announced in October that she was leaving the post by the end of the year.

But Trump has also used the United Nations to try to advance his foreign policy agenda on Iran and North Korea.

Fox News said Mr Trump would tweet about the appointment on Friday morning, while Bloomberg said it had been told of the decision to appoint Ms Nauert by three sources.

Still, with Trump, no staffing decision is final until he makes the formal announcement, since he has been known to change course in the past.

Requests for comment to the state department and the White House were not immediately returned.

Nauert joined the State Department past year after a career as a television anchor and correspondent at Fox News.

She had served as the State Department spokesman and was promoted in March to acting under secretary of state for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.

ABC News reported in November that Nauert had been offered the United Nations job, but it was not clear at the time whether she had accepted.

Her appointment to the United Nations role would have to be approved by the US Senate.

The post is considered one of the highest profile positions in US diplomacy.

Just 18 months ago, she wasn't even in government. With a master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, she had come to Fox from ABC News, where she was a general assignment reporter. She does not have prior political or policy-making experience.

Shut out from the top by Tillerson and his inner circle, Nauert developed relationships with career diplomats.
