A healthy baby girl has been born using a womb transplanted from a dead woman.
"The Brazilian group has proven that using deceased donors is a viable option", said the clinic's Dr. Tommaso Falcone, who was involved in the OH case.
These are still early days for uterine transplants, says Kate O'Neill, co-lead investigator for the University of Pennsylvania's uterus transplant program, who was not part of the work in Brazil. Flyckt and her colleagues in Cleveland have also performed two transplants from deceased donors.
It said the case involved connecting veins from the donor's uterus with the recipient's veins, as well as linking arteries, ligaments, and vaginal canals.
Her uterus was removed and transplanted in surgery that lasted more than ten hours.
The news opens the door for patients who are normally unable to bear children - after hysterectomies, or because they suffer from diseases like cancer - to receive a uterus transplant and carry their own child. On the other hand, the researchers state that transplants from deceased donors might have some benefits over donations from live donors.
This marks the first time a baby was born from a deceased donor uterus and the first uterine transplantation to occur in Latin America.
Experts estimate that infertility affects around 10 to 15 per cent of couples of reproductive age worldwide. Deceased donor uterus transplants have been attempted in the past few years, but none resulted in the birth of a healthy baby.

"There are still lots of things we don't understand about pregnancies, like how embryos implant", said Cesar Diaz, who co-authored an accompanying commentary in the journal. In this case, a cesarean section was performed for birth at 35 weeks gestation, and along with the delivery of an nearly 6 pound healthy baby girl, the uterus was also removed. Uterine transplants can sidestep these issues and allow women who otherwise wouldn't be able to have the chance to carry their own pregnancies.
The 34-year-old woman from São Paulo, Brazil, underwent the procedure in 2016 under the guidance of Dr Dani Ejzenberg and his research team at the University Hospital of Sao Paulo.
The current norm for receiving a womb transplant is that the organ would come from a live family member willing to donate it. A total of 39 transplants have resulted in 11 live births - with the first taking place in Sweden in 2013. "While uterine surrogacy is legal in the us, this offers an option, albeit an extreme and expensive one, to women who want to carry their own baby".
"The first uterus transplants from live donors were a medical milestone, creating the possibility of childbirth for many infertile women with access to suitable donors and the needed medical facilities". The donated uterus was then removed from the patient after the birth.
The mother and baby were discharged from the hospital three days after birth.
Until recently, the only options available to women with so-called uterine infertility were adoption or the services of a surrogate mother.
After seven months, the fertilised eggs were implanted.
The baby girl was seven months and 20 days old, weighing 7.5kg when the researchers wrote their report. For future procedures he hopes to cut down on the time to transplant by removing the uterus before other organs, like the heart and kidneys.
