A USA official told Fox News that seven Marines were on board the two aircraft.

Two military aircraft crashed early Thursday while refueling in the air during a training mission off the coast of Japan, the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) said Wednesday.

There were five personnel on board the KC-130 and two on board the F/A-18 at the time of the incident, a Marine official told ABC News. It was not clear how many crew members were on each of the planes.

The planes involved were an F-18 fighter and a C-130 tanker, the official said.

One survivor has been rescued by Japanese search teams but the six others remain missing.
