Thousands of Northern Ireland O2 customers lose data services over technical issue

O2 blames global network outage on third-party software glitch O2 data not working as company has network issues
Troy Mann | 06 December, 2018, 17:54

A data network outage that has left O2 customers unable to use mobile data is the result of a "global software issue" according to the operator.

The network also provides services to Sky, Tesco, Giffgaff and Lycamobile networks.

The company confirmed the network issues on Twitter, saying: "Our technical teams are investigating reports of issues when using data".

In a further tweet, O2 said the problem was related to a software issue in the system of a third party supplier.

O2 said its technical teams are working with its supplier's teams to fix the problem. Voice calls are working OK.

"We apologise for any inconvenience", the firm said, after problems were first reported at around 5.30am.

In total, around 32 million customers are affected.

Users of O2 services, who were unable to access the internet or apps that require an internet connection, poured onto social media to complain about the outage.

In addition, London Bus timetables rely on O2's coverage, meaning that these were also down this morning.

O2 has not said what is causing the fault on Thursday.

"Our technical teams are working with their teams to ensure this is fixed as quickly as possible.

Updates will be shared here as soon they are available". Voice calls are working OK. "We'd encourage you to use Wi-Fi wherever you can and we are really sorry".
