Fortnite gets new Minecraft style third mode

Epic Games launches online store to compete with Valve’s steam Store Epic Games launches online store to compete with Valve’s steam Store Rohan Samal

Epic Games has had a tough stance on Google especially when it comes to the fees involved in the Google Play Store. The store will also support mods, non-commercial games and free-to-play stuff, as Steam does, and DRM is entirely optional. Simply off perception, Epic's timing couldn't be better for developers looking for a better option. The announcement seemed to be aimed at bigger publisher seeking to release their games exclusively on their own launchers, like Activision-Blizzard and Bethesda.

Just yesterday, EIC Asif Khan discussed the new revenue split that Valve revealed for the Steam store and how it is a "sign of weakness".

The Epic Games Store is set to launch "soon" and specialises in PC and Mac titles, with developers gaining 88% of revenue in sales and the remaining 12% going to the Unreal Engine creator.

Epic Games to undercut Valve with own PC games store

Safe to say, the company is referring to side loading the Epic Games Store on Android just like how Fortnite is playable on Google's OS. Games that generate between $10 million and $50 million in revenue will only see 25% of that revenue taken by Valve. If so, which do you use? The math is quite simple: "we pay around 2.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent for payment processing for major payment methods, less than 1.5 per cent for CDN costs (assuming all games are updated as often as Fortnite), and between 1 and 2 per cent for variable operating and customer support costs".

Details about its "hand-curated" launch lineup are promised to debut at the Game Awards conference this coming Thursday. Contrary to other stores, Epic Games promises to give developers 88% of the revenues while keeping 12% for overhead.

The aim of the tweaks to the Steam commission structure is to provide a bigger incentive for the big games companies to stick with the platform, rather than set-up their own. Fortnite studio Epic Games has announced that it's opening up its storefront to third-parties, taking less than half compared to its competitor. December 6 is the Fortnite season 7 release date, but clearly there's much more in store later that day. But the company was quick to recognise the value of providing both DRM to other games companies, as well as an online portal through which they could be sold.
