Eliott C. McLaughlin, CNN - A bus crash early Monday killed one child and injured 45 other people, majority children, when the driver lost control of the coach on Interstate 30 west of Benton, Arkansas State Police said.

The crash was reported west of Benton, Arkansas, at around 2:40 a.m. Monday morning, according to a press release.

One child was killed and 40 others were injured when a charter bus overturned, police said.

Authorities on scene say more than 20 people were rushed to hospitals in the area.

The driver is alive and being questioned by state troopers.

"All I heard was a swerve, and then it started flipping down one hill, over the service road and down another hill", Hailey said from a wheelchair at the hospital where he was being treated for leg injuries and a bump on his head.

Hailey said there were seat belts on the bus, but he didn't know how many people were wearing them.

"On behalf of all Memphians, our hearts and prayers go out to the Orange Mound children and their families involved in this morning's tragic bus accident in Arkansas", Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said in a statement.

"When we talked to teammates here, you saw on their faces about what that young person meant to them, the impact that he had on the school community", Manning said.

Maxson said some of the children suffered injuries to the brain or other internal organs, while others suffered cuts and broken bones.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

It does not appear that weather played a role in the crash, Sadler said. Arkansas Children's took 24 patients, and all are in stable condition.

"When troopers arrived at the scene, numerous children were already off of the bus", Sadler said. A hospital spokeswoman said she couldn't provide any details, citing privacy laws.
