"Stephen Hawking was a huge personality worldwide", Thomas Venning, head of the Books and Manuscripts department at auction house Christie's London, told Reuters prior to the auction.

Among the items sold during the nine-day sale in London was his wheelchair, a signed copy of his Ph.D. thesis at Cambridge University, a script during his appearance on The Simpsons, and many more.

The paper, entitled "Properties of expanding universes", is one of only five copies known to exist and featured Hawking's signature, along with the inscription "This dissertation is my original work".

The world-changing doctoral thesis was signed by Hawking.

In total the auction raised £1,824,375.

Hawking passed away at the age of 76 back on March 14, 2018 after suffering from a motor neurone disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) for over 55 years.

Proceeds from the wheelchair sale will go to benefit the Stephen Hawking Foundation and the Motor Neurone Disease Association; proceeds from Prof Hawking's other items will go to his estate.

The second-highest price of Hawking's collection was achieved by a selection of medals and awards presented throughout his career, which sold for £296,750 ($388,970).

The Simpsons script, meanwhile, was sold for around $8,100.

When the document was made available online previous year by Cambridge University, where Hawking spent his career, it was so popular that it crashed the website.

Apart from Hawking, one of Newton's manuscripts sold for around $130,000, a set of seven awards, including Einstein's award for achievement in natural sciences sold for about $387,000, a letter written by Darwin sold for $65,230, and one of Einstein's manuscripts gathered $42,399.

Prof Hawking's book, A Brief History of Time, which he signed with a thumbprint in 1988, sold for £68,750, way above the £3,000 guide price.
