Women whose body clocks mean they are "morning people" have a lower risk of developing breast cancer, say United Kingdom researchers.

The Mendelian randomisation analysis, which included data from BCAC of 122,977 cases of breast cancer and 105,974 women without the disease (the controls), found that a preference for mornings reduced the risk of breast cancer by 40 per cent compared with being an evening type (an "owl").

In addition, women who slept longer than seven to eight hours had a 20 percent increased risk per additional hour slept.

Lead scientist Dr Rebecca Richmond, from the University of Bristol, said: "Using genetic variants associated with people's preference for morning or evening, sleep duration and insomnia. we investigated whether these sleep traits have a causal contribution to the risk of developing breast cancer".

In a final note to wrap up the series of activities, Hospital Manager, Mrs. Wilhelmina Banful said Medifem embarked on the activities as part of efforts to raise awareness on breast cancer which is killing many people especially women in Ghana and urged the general public to go for regular screening.

This echoes previous studies which found night-shift workers and those exposed to more artificial light at night are at greater risk of cancer. The findings, which were not peer-reviewed, were presented at the NCRI Cancer Conference in Glasgow, Scotland.

He noted they found a causal effect of increased sleep duration and sleep fragmentation on breast cancer from movement monitors worn by around 85,000 UK Biobank participants.

They looked at 341 snippets of DNA (the instructions for the human body) that control whether we are likely to be a lark or an owl.

The consortium has the largest collection of genetic data on women with breast cancer obtained so far.

"The statistical method used in this study, called Mendelian randomization, does not always allow causality to be inferred", said Dipender Gill, clinical research training fellow at Imperial College London.

Dr Richmond and her colleagues are planning to investigate the mechanisms underlying the effects of different sleep characteristics on the risk of developing breast cancer. Around 4% of United States cancer deaths were linked to drinking alcohol and the Breast Cancer Now charity warns that any alcohol intake increases the risk of breast cancer.

Careem, one of the region's leading technology organisations, launched a breast cancer awareness campaign in partnership with the Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) last October.

Researchers from the University of Bristol have analysed the link between sleeping patterns and breast cancer in women.

"We know that sleep is important generally for health", said Richmond.

The Chief Executive Officer, AXA Mansard Health Limited, Mr Tope Adeniyi, said, "There is still no sure way to prevent breast cancer yet".

Similar studies have revealed a role for sleep preferences and mental health, including schizophrenia risk. Men and women of all ages are encouraged to check themselves for breast cancer as it can affect anyone.
