There will be Muslim women in Congress for the first time in history, as Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib easily won their House races.

On January 1, 2009, Rashida became the first Muslim American woman to serve in the Michigan Legislature, and the second Muslim woman in history to be elected to any USA state legislature.

As an 8-year-old, Omar and her family fled Somalia, first living in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years before coming to the United States and moving to Cedar-Riverside in 1997.

For Tlaib, Tuesday's election marks the second time she will have made history in recent years.

And I have a feeling this is just a drop in the bucket of an even bigger progressive, young, woman, Muslim wave to come.

Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib was another Muslim woman elected to the US Congress.

Sending her best wishes to Tlaib on the shared historic achievement, Omar wrote on Twitter: "Congratulations to my sister @RashidaTlaib on your victory!"

Omar was favoured to take a seat in Congress after winning her Democratic primary in a heavily left-leaning Minnesota voting district. She ran unopposed in a congressional district that stretches from Detroit to Dearborn, Michigan.

The women show a bit of the diversity of Muslims in the United States, one of the country's most diverse groups. With this victory, she will be the first Somali-American elected to U.S. Congress.

She said her political life began attending local Democratic Farmer Labor party caucuses with her grandfather after arriving in the US.

Tlaib campaigned on a platform that advocated for a $15 minimum wage, free public college tuition and ending corporate welfare. She will succeed the first Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison, who vacated the seat to run in Minnesota's attorney general race.

Meanwhile in the Senate - the upper chamber of Congress - it looks likely the Republican Party will hold a majority with 51 seats against the Democrats' 43.
