Democrats win control of the House as Republicans take Senate

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Chele Farley Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Chele Farley

"Dealing a major setback to President Trump's legislative agenda".

With a House majority, Democrats will have the power to investigate Mr Trump's tax returns, possible business conflicts of interest and allegations involving his 2016 campaign's links to Russian Federation. Republicans are projected to keep at least 50 seats in the 100-member US Senate, which gives them control as Vice President Mike Pence will be the tiebreaker.

While a Democratic House would block some of Trump's plans, a GOP majority enables the president to continue restocking the American judiciary with judges that rule according to the Constitution rather than social agendas.

And Rep. Adam Schiff, slated to become chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has vowed to probe alleged Trump campaign-Russia collusion.

"I'm not on the ballot, but in a certain way, I'm on the ballot", Trump said in October.

Voting in Chicago, James Gerlock, 27, a Republican, said he wanted to see more of the soaring economic growth that Trump says is the fruit of his business-friendly policies.

The opposite trends in the House and the Senate speak to the quirks of the political system but also the growing divide between urban, diverse, more affluent Democratic areas and largely white, rural conservative regions.

The outcome is a significant victory for Democrats after the party was locked out of power in Washington following the 2016 presidential election.

The midterms are not even over yet, but House Democrats have signaled that they are going to demand President Trump release his tax returns.

Democratic Senators Joe Manchin and Bob Menendez held on after tough campaigns in West Virginia and New Jersey respectively, but it was cold comfort.

To stem Republican losses, Trump sprinted through mostly white regions of the country, interjecting dark and foreboding warnings about what Democratic power would mean for the nation. According to preliminary information, Republicans have already ousted Democratic senators in Florida, Indiana, North Dakota, Tennessee and Texas, but lost one seat in Mississippi.

Donald Trump reacts to midterm results on Twitter: ‘Big Victory last night’
This is a substantial loss for the Republicans, as they have so far lost 28 seats in the House to the Democrats. He said he would "certainly have an open mind" about releasing them when the IRS audit ends.

Some of the biggest Democratic stars of the campaign season were struggling.

Trump's influence likely helped lift some Republican candidates to victory: Braun and Ron DeSantis in the Florida gubernatorial race, for example.

In the leadup to the election, anxious Republicans privately expressed confidence in their narrow Senate majority but feared the House could slip away.

Democrats also captured governorships in Michigan, Illinois and Kansas.

In his campaign rallies, Trump had said that he was on the ballot and made it a referendum on his almost two years rule.

The Democratic gains were fueled by women, young and Hispanic voters, a Reuters/Ipsos Election Day poll found. Fifty-five percent of women said they backed a Democrat for the House this year, compared to 49 percent in the 2014 midterm congressional election.

Democrats also had success in House Districts 23, 24, 28 and 29.

Democrats turned out in droves to register disapproval of his policies on such issues as immigration and his travel ban targeting several Muslim-majority countries.

This was the first national referendum on Trump's leadership since he won the presidency two years ago, and even more than most presidents, Trump staked his reputation on the results.

Prior to the elections, the Republicans held 236 seats, and Democrats - 193, and six seats remained vacant. "All the GOP has is the other half of Congress, the Supreme Court, and a president who does whatever he wants". Republican candidates in some of the country's most competitive races gambled by tying themselves to Trump in a bid to turn out voters.

"Mr. President, you have underestimated the strength of America's better angels", Cuomo said to cheers. Brian Fitzpatrick in the Philadelphia suburbs and New York Rep.
