The U.S. Navy is releasing video of a U.S. EP-3 Aries aircraft flying November 5, 2018, in global airspace over the Black Sea being intercepted by a Russian Su-27.
A Russian Su-27 made a risky pass ahead of a US Navy EP-3 Aries taking part in a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military exercise in worldwide air space above the Black Sea on Monday.
Also on Monday, a Pentagon spokesperson said that the Russian jet came "very, very close" to the U.S. EP-3 aircraft, adding that it made an additional pass after activating its afterburners to create more turbulence.
It said the intercept lasted about 25 minutes.
As noted in the U.S. Navy, EP-3 Aries acted in accordance with worldwide law and did not provoke such Russian activities. Because of this, after the first flight of a fighter plane-the scout felt the turbulence, and after the second felt the vibration. "We expect them to behave within worldwide standards set to ensure safety and to prevent incidents ... unsafe actions increase the risk of miscalculation and potential for midair collisions". Russian officials at the time said it was a legal maneuver to escort the Navy plane.
