Ocasio-Cortez' victory over Republican Anthony Pappas, an economics professor, had been widely expected since the Democratic primary in June, when she scored an unanticipated upset over 10-term U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley.

More than 100 women were projected to win seats in the House of Representatives, easily shattering the record.

Before Tuesday's elections, women made up a record 20% of Congress - 23% of the Senate and 19% of the House.

The 29-year-old has championed her working class and Puerto Rican roots, moonlighting as a bartender until defeating a Democratic grandee in a party primary earlier this year, capturing imaginations around the country.

The gains among women on Capitol Hill come as potential Democratic candidates for president are already taking steps to challenge Trump, several prominent female Democrats among them. They also picked up two more firsts for Congress: Tlaib is the first-ever Palestinian-American and Omar the first Somalian-American to serve in that office.

In May, when asked if they approved or disapproved of the way Trump was handling his presidency, 47 percent of men and 43 percent of women approved. Their lesson from the last election was that "if Donald Trump is president, anybody can be president so I should run too, for at least Congress or state legislature".

She said numerous women and minorities didn't want to be first or make history, but rather wanted change on issues important to them.

A proud Palestinian, Tlaib has also been an advocate for Palestinian rights and is an outspoken critic of Trump. Omar made history in 2016 when she was elected the first Somali-American legislator in the U.S.

The resignation of former Rep. John Conyers Jr. due to health concerns triggered an open seat, and Tlaib was unopposed in her contest.

- Marsha Blackburn: First woman elected to the Senate from Tennessee.

Democrat Ayanna Pressley completed her quest to become Massachusetts' first black woman elected to Congress. Davids defeated incumbent Republican Kevin Yoder.

In her acceptance speech Tuesday night, Ocasio-Cortez said, "In the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, our greatest scarcity is not a lack of resources but the absence of political courage and moral imagination".

A Republican who served in the House will become the first woman to represent Tennessee in the Senate.

There are now more women governors, as well.

The record-breaking number of women running led to another record being broken. In all, 237 were candidates for the House, including 185 Democrats and 52 Republicans.

"When you talk about Democrats clinching control of the House, you have the women candidates to thank", Delmore said. Democrats were galvanized by #MeToo movement, which helped attract female voters and recruit more women to run for office. "So that's our objective".
