When it comes to the planet quest, the next big thing on the horizon is the James Webb Space Telescope, which is now due for launch in 2021 and may be able to look for signs of life in the atmospheres of alien planets. The telescope has now gone silent, its fuel tank empty.

NASA announced on Tuesday that the Kepler mission - which has transformed how we understand planets outside of our solar system - is officially over.

Over the course of its nine years, Kepler identified 2,662 planets and 61 supernovae on just 3.12 gallons of fuel. "If life has been developing over six and a half billion years before Earth was formed, there may be some very interesting lifeforms for us to find as we search these early planets". Kepler also characterized a class of planets that don't exist in our solar system: worlds between the sizes of Earth and Neptune, or "super-Earths".

Inside the Hazardous Processing Facility at Astrotech in Titusville, Fla., NASA's Kepler spacecraft is placed on a stand for fueling. It found inferno-like gas giants, rocky planets, planets orbiting binary stars, Earth-size planets, planets in the habitable zone capable of supporting liquid water on the surface, planets twice the size of Earth, the strangely flickering Tabby's Star, new details about the TRAPPIST-1 planets and, in December, an eight-planet system.

It showed us rocky worlds the size of Earth that, like Earth, might harbour life.

The washing machine-sized telescope will scan nearly the entire sky for two years in the search for more worlds circling stars beyond our solar system that could harbor life.

Paul Hertz, NASA astrophysics division director said, "Now, because of Kepler, what we think about the universe has changed, Kepler opened the gate for the exploration of the cosmos".

"Before we launched Kepler, we didn't know if planets were common or rare in our galaxy", he said. Kepler also found nature often produces jam-packed planetary systems, in some cases with so many planets orbiting close to their parent stars that our own inner solar system looks sparse by comparison.

"It was like trying to detect a flea crawling across a auto headlight when the vehicle was 100 miles away", said Borucki said. Eventually, TESS itself will be joined by the James Webb Space Telescope, which despite being kind of a mess right now is supposed to launch in 2021.

NASA has tallied the number of exoplanets that Kepler has discovered at 2,681. But more important, Kepler was the first NASA mission to detect Earth-size planets in the habitable zones of other stars. "The Kepler spacecraft may now be retired, but the Kepler data will continue to yield scientific discoveries for years to come". "Kepler has had a successful nine-and-a-half year mission".

Such data has allowed scientists to better interpret stellar behavior and properties-critical to the study of stars and the planets that orbit them. "That was an incredible diving catch", said Paul Hertz, astrophysics division director at NASA Headquarters.

'Not only did it show us how many planets could be out there, it sparked an entirely new and robust field of research that has taken the science community by storm.

Another longtime spacecraft chasing unusual worlds in our own solar system, meanwhile, is also close to death.

Nasa has experienced a series of spacecraft problems lately. And recent glitches with the 28-year-old Hubble Space Telescope and the 19-year-old Chandra X-Ray Observatory have signaled that those grand-scale telescopes are past their prime, mechanically if not scientifically.
