Lottery officials in the United States say an unidentified, and clearly very lucky, individual has won a record $1.5bn Mega Millions jackpot.

They said a single ticket sold at the KC Mart in Simpsonville, S.C., matched all six numbers to win the Mega Millions jackpot.

Three tickets sold in Florida won a million dollars each, there was also a three million dollar victor.

- A winning Mega Millions ticket was sold in SC, according to lottery officials there.

Should the unidentified victor pick a one-time cash option, they would walk away with a cool $878 million. Mega Millions winners have 180 days to claim their prizes after the draw date printed on the ticket. There's a Powerball drawing Wednesday night with a whopping jackpot of $620 million.

The Mega Millions jackpot will reset to its starting value of $40 million for Friday night's drawing.

Holli Armstrong, spokeswoman for the South Carolina Education Lottery, said the retailer will get a US$50,000 payout (NZ$76,400).

Still, about half of the approximately 320 million people living in the USA are expected to play in today's Mega Millions drawing.

Lottery officials in SC said one ticket with all six winning numbers had been sold in the state.

The $1.6-billion prize is the biggest ever.

Two tickets matched four white balls and the Mega Ball, winning a base prize of $10,000.

SC is one of seven states that don't require lottery winners to be publicly identified, CNN affiliate WIS reported.

The jackpot offered to a victor of Mega Millions, one of two major lottery games played across the USA, was $40m in July.

The lucky victor can also lay low for 180 days until he or she has to claim the eye-popping prize, said Brown, who happened to be in the Big Apple on business during the drawing.

Beyond the Orlando area, winning $1 million tickets were sold at the 7-Eleven at 909 South 78th St.in Tampa and United Fuel at 6900 Southwest 8th St.in Miami.

The windfall had been accumulating since July 24, when a group of 11 co-workers in California split a $543 million prize.

The Mega Millions' odds were lowered a year ago to 1-in-303 million from 1-in-259 million to generate larger prizes.

Today's Powerball lottery prize stands at $620m, making it the fifth-largest jackpot in USA history, after no one got all six numbers in Saturday's drawing.

The odds of winning jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350. Though it appears this jackpot has topped it, the final sales are still being compiled, according to Mega Millions.

While most attention has been on the Mega Millions game, Powerball also has been soaring.

The Powerball The Powerball has climbed since the last victor in NY in August and has had 20 drawings since then without a jackpot victor.
