Tall people are at a greater risk of cancer, new research says

And people shouldn't stop eating fruits and vegetables if they can't afford more expensive organically grown options.

Researchers pin point specifically pesticides that may have carcinogenic properties, like glyphosate, malathion and diazinon.

The meaning of the findings, according to researchers, is that a higher frequency of organic food consumption was associated with a reduced risk of cancer.

Regardless of whether or not they're organic, fruits and veggies should be part of every diet, Baudry and other experts said. Specifically, they were 73% less likely to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma and 21% less likely to develop post-menopausal breast cancer.

"At the current stage of research, the relationship between organic food consumption and cancer risk is still unclear", the Harvard researchers wrote.

Joanna Lewis, director of policy at the Soil Association, said: "Healthier diets and organic food should be a right for all, not a privilege for the few".

Pesticide is among the risk factors of cancer and organic food has less of the stuff compared to regular food.

For many people, the often-higher cost of organic food is a barrier.

Researchers at the Sorbonne Paris Cité Epidemiology and Statistics Research Centre (INRA, Inserm, University Paris 13 and CNAM) conducted the epidemiological study. They were allotted a score, on the basis of how often they eat organic food ranging from "most of the time" to "never" or "I don't know". The most prevalent was breast cancer (34.3%), prostate cancer (13.4%), melanoma and spinocellular carcinoma (10.1%), colorectal cancer (7.4%), NHLs (3.5%), and other lymphomas (1.1%).

Those who ate more organic food were also more likely to have higher incomes, job status and education level.

When they considered each type of cancer separately, they found that only three had a statistically significant association with organic food consumption.

"Because of their lower exposure to pesticide residues, it can be hypothesised that high organic food consumers may have a lower risk of developing cancer". The research included around 69,000 French adults-more than three-quarters of which were women in their 40s-and compared the consumption of organic products with cancer rates over the course of about four years.

However, Chavarro added that researchers designing future studies should be mindful of certain limitations in this new study.

Investigators also carried out a sensitivity analysis by including the main determinants of pesticide exposure - namely vegetable products - in the organic food score.

For example, an article published in Workplace Health & Safety notes the link between pesticide exposure and developmental issues in children.
